Mount Bromo Ijen Tour Combines Visits to Two of Indonesia’s Most Famous Volcanoes
When I think of epic volcano adventures in Indonesia, the Bromo Ijen tour always tops my list.
This trip gives you a rare chance to experience not just one, but two of the country’s most iconic volcanoes Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen in a single journey.
If you’re already exploring Bali, adding Java’s volcanic landscapes to your itinerary makes for a perfect contrast to the island’s tropical vibe.
Mount Bromo, located in East Java, is famous for its lunar-like terrain and sunrise views that will honestly blow your mind.
Ijen, on the other hand, is known for its surreal blue flames and its turquoise acid lake, one of the largest in the world.
Combining the two in one seamless tour means you get the best of both worlds: fire, mist, and magic all in one package.

Tour Highlights and Attractions

Mount Bromo: Famous for Its Breathtaking Sunrise View and Active Volcanic Landscape
I’ve seen a lot of sunrises in my life, but nothing compares to watching the first rays of light break over Mount Bromo. The best part? You don’t just see the sunrise, you feel it.
Standing at one of the highest viewpoints, you’ll see Mount Bromo surrounded by a sea of clouds, with Mount Semeru puffing in the background. It’s pure cinematic magic.
Once the sun is up, you’ll take a 4WD Jeep across the “Sea of Sand”, a surreal volcanic plain, and then hike up Bromo’s crater for a closer look at the steaming caldera.
It’s not a difficult climb, and the reward is totally worth it.
Ijen Crater: Known for Its Stunning Turquoise Acid Lake and Blue Flame at Night.
Now let’s talk about Kawah Ijen, which might just be one of the most alien places you’ll ever visit.
The crater is home to a massive, glowing turquoise lake that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.
But the real show happens before dawn, when the famous blue flames flicker out of the sulfur vents.
You’ll start the trek around midnight, guided by locals who know the trail inside out.
At the top, you’ll witness this rare natural phenomenon — only found in two places on Earth.
Once the flames fade, stick around to see the sunrise reveal the full color of the crater lake. It’s pure magic, and totally safe with your guide.
Unique Wildlife and Diverse Ecosystem in the Surrounding National Parks

Beyond the volcanoes, both Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and Ijen Nature Reserve are full of surprising biodiversity.
During your journey, you might spot:
- Wild horses grazing in the lowlands
- Edelweiss flowers blooming on mountain slopes
- Birds and butterflies fluttering through the highland forests
If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of Javanese wildlife like langurs or civets. These parks are protected and play a huge role in preserving the ecosystem of East Java.

- From there, we’ll catch a ferry that crosses the Bali Strait to Java, which takes about an hour.
- Once we arrive at Ketapang Port, we’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant — a perfect chance to stretch your legs and fuel up.
- After lunch, we’ll hit the road again for a scenic 5–6 hour drive to the Mount Bromo area, where you’ll settle into your hotel and rest up before the sunrise adventure the next day.
- The landscapes on this route are ever-changing and beautiful — from rice fields to mountain ranges.

Day 2: Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour – Drive to Ijen Crater Area (Banyuwangi)
- We’ll start the day early, and I mean really early – around 3:00 AM.
- After hopping into a 4WD Jeep, we’ll drive through the dark volcanic plains to the famous Penanjakan Viewpoint or Kingkong Hill.
- At an altitude of 2,700 meters, you’ll witness the legendary sunrise over Mount Bromo, with Mount Semeru and Mount Batok adding to the jaw-dropping view.
- After soaking in the sunrise, we’ll continue by Jeep into the Sea of Sand, a vast ash-covered desert.
- Then you’ll have the option to either walk or ride a horse across the sand to the base of Mount Bromo.
- From there, climb a stairway up the slope and find yourself on the rim of an active crater — it’s an unforgettable experience.
- Around 8:00 AM, we’ll return to the hotel for breakfast, a quick shower, and packing.

Day 3: Ijen Crater Tour – Return to Bali
- Your day starts around 4:00 AM, as we drive from the hotel to Licin Village, the gateway to Ijen.
- We’ll travel through remote plantations and a lush tropical forest, one of the few left in Java with towering trees and wild ferns.
- After about 1.5 hours, we’ll reach the Paltuding basecamp at 1,850 meters.
- From there, the hike begins! It’s a 1.5-hour trek up to the rim of Ijen Crater, where you’ll enjoy the fresh mountain air and see the glowing turquoise acid lake at the top.
- This lake, one of the most acidic on Earth, is surrounded by dramatic crater walls that reflect the morning light in surreal colors.
- It’s an incredible sight — calm, eerie, and humbling all at once.
Optional: Blue Fire Tour at Midnight (No Extra Cost!)
If the weather’s good and you’re up for it, we can begin the Blue Fire tour around 12:30 AM.
This rare natural phenomenon — electric-blue flames rising from sulfur vents — is only visible in a couple of places on Earth, and Ijen is the most accessible one.
This experience is already included in the tour price.
Just so you know:
As you explore the crater, you’ll also see sulfur miners at work, carrying up to 80 kg of sulfur on their backs up narrow paths.
It’s both inspiring and eye-opening.
After we descend and return to the base, we’ll drive back to the hotel for breakfast and to grab your bags.
Then, we’ll head to Ketapang Port, catch the ferry back to Bali, and drive you back to your hotel — whether you’re in Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu, or anywhere else.

“We were a family of three who travelled on a 3 night tour of Bromo/ Ijen from 22nd to 25th April. We had trouble deciding on a tour operator since all websites give out the same information and look similar. We sent out an initial mail to ijenbromotours.com and received a prompt reply from Devita. Devita replied to all our queries about the itinerary and the costing patiently and even managed to change our hotel bookings to get us the accommodation we requested since we had a eleven year old daughter travelling with us( Jiwa Jawa resort Bromo and Ijen Resort ). the tour cost had to be transferred upfront and the remaining had to be paid to the guide. We were received at the Surabaya train station by our guide Mr. Slamet and our driver Mr. Irfan. Mr. Irfan was a quiet, smiling and capable driver. Mr. Slamet was extremely friendly and patient throughout the tour. He made sure our tour went off without a hitch in spite of a chaotic and busy weekend full of tourists at the Bromo crater even ditching the four wheel drive halfway through the Bromo climb to arrange for Ojeks(local bike taxis) for us to reach the viewpoint just before sunrise. Though the clouds masked the sunrise the view from the top was breathtaking. We even crossed the sea of sand to reach the rim of the Bromo crater. To peek into the bowels of the earth was a surreal experience. From there was a six hour drive to Ijen and an early morning (1 AM ) three hour trek to the Ijen crater to see the blue fire. Mr. Slamet had thoughtfully brought along good quality gas masks for all of us. He was happy for us at our delight on seeing the blue fire. At the end of the tour they dropped us off at the ferry port even ensuring that a person accompanied us on the ferry journey to the port in Bali where a taxi was waiting to transfer us to Bali airport. We would recommend GWI travels for anyone looking for a reliable tour operator for the Bromo Ijen tour.”

Ijen Bromo Tours, based in Banyuwangi, created a great 5-day travel package for us.
Gigeh & Devita have been amazing in communicating and arranging a once in a lifetime adventure for us!
“From the start of requesting quotes and information, the booking process, pre-payment, our guide and driver, the itinerary and sights – right till the end when we were dropped at our hotel in Bali… everything ran super smooth and we were looked after very well.
We were met by our driver (Mr Usup) and our (very well) English speaking guide (Mr Slamet) at our hotel in Surabaya.
Our journey DAY 1 took us to the Madakaripura Waterfall and on to our hotel in Bromo. We were made aware in advance that accommodation in these remote areas are basic, so nothing ever came as a bad surprise.
DAY 2 we saw the sun rise – a spectacular view of Mt Bromo, and then drove over the caldera and climbed to the rim of Mt Bromo. This was the highlight of my whole Java trip.
We then drove to Kalibaru Highlands and spent a lovely day at the Margo Utomo Agro Resort. The next morning, DAY 3, we travelled to Sukumade … a 4-hour rough 4WD journey that took us through rivers and valleys to reach the Ranger’s accommodation in a very remote area. The accommodation here is VERY basic, but the experience of seeing the Green Turtles laying their eggs on the beach at night, and releasing the Tukik (baby turtles) the next morning, makes it all worth while. Day 4, Our last stretch was to Ketapang Indah Hotel in Banyuwangi (more modern 3* resort by the beach). We spent most of the day catching up on sleep, as we needed to meet our guide and driver at 12H30 to depart for our Kawah Ijen Blue Flame tour – another once in a lifetime experience. After our Kawah Ijen experience, we were taken back to the hotel to enjoy breakfast, freshen up and check out. DAY 5 we were transported and assisted right to the ferry to Gilimanuk. At Gilimanuk we were met by the transport provider who drove us for 4 hours (with a lunch stop) to our hotel in Ubud.”
Ijen Bromo Tours arrange all this for us and we were very pleased. Great service, good value and trustworthy!
Thank you Gigeh, Devita, Mr Usup & Mr Slamet – you provided us with an experience of a lifetime. Find it on: tripadvisor
