It’s nestled in the vast Tengger Caldera within the beautiful Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
So, let me tell you exactly how to find this natural wonder and why its location makes it so special:
Precise Location
Coordinates: 7°56’30″S 112°57’00″E
Nearest major city: Surabaya (3–4 hours’ drive)
Closest village: Cemoro Lawang (the main gateway for Bromo tours).
Here are some key landmarks around Bromo that you might like to check out:
- Sea of Sand (Lautan Pasir): Imagine a vast, desert-like plain, gently rolling and seemingly endless, surrounding a beautiful volcano.
- Mount Batok is the perfect place to visit if you’re into taking photos of beautiful landscapes. It’s just next door to Bromo, so you can easily combine the two on the same trip.
- Pananihkan Peak: Hey, if you’re looking for the most popular sunrise viewpoint, then you’ve come to the right place!
Ijen Crater
Welcome to the beautiful Ijen Crater, also known as Kawah Ijen! It’s located in East Java, Indonesia, near the lovely town of Banyuwangi.
It’s right on the border between Bondowoso Regency and Banyuwangi Regency, so it’s super easy to get to from both cities.
Ijen Volcano Complex is a group of stratovolcanoes within the larger Ijen Plateau area, and the crater is part of this.
Welcome,! The place where you can start your adventure to the crater is called Paltuding Post.
It’s the main entrance and the perfect starting point for your hike. From Paltuding, it’s about an easy 1.5 to 2-hour walk to the rim of the crater.
If you’re planning your trip:
From Banyuwangi: The drive to Paltuding is about an hour and a half.
Expect a 2.5 to 3-hour drive from Bondowoso.
From Bali: Cross by ferry from Gilimanuk Port to Ketapang Port (Banyuwangi), then drive another 1.5 hours to reach Ijen.

Java has several major airports, including Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Adisucipto Airport in Yogyakarta, and connections from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport.
Domestic flights are affordable and frequent, making it easy for you to hop between cities. Trust me—choosing air travel can save you valuable time, especially when exploring Java’s many iconic spots.
