As you probably know, it’s famous for its blue fire and sulphur mining. The Indonesian government often shuts the site down when there’s more volcanic activity, dangerous gas emissions or other geological events.

According to the Standard Operating Procedures, Ijen Crater is open from 2:00 AM until 12:00 PM, and visitors must stay above 500 meters from the crater.

Regarding
THE REOPENING OF THE IJEN CRATER NATURAL TOURISM PARK.
Whereas the Ijen Crater Natural Tourism Park, located in Bondowoso Regency and Banyuwangi Regency, has been closed for activities within the area since July 12, 2024, as stated in Circular Letter No. SE.1289/K2/BIDTEK.1/KSA/07/2024.
In an effort to improve education and have a multiplier effect on improving the welfare of the community around the Ijen Crater Natural Tourism Park, the Ijen Crater Natural Tourism Park will be reopened for public nature tourism, climbing, and research activities starting from September 8, 2024.
The aforementioned activities must follow the applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), including preparing basic climbing safety equipment (flashlights, masks, cold-weather clothing), and adhering to the applicable health protocols. Ticket reservations can be made online through the website http://www.tiket.bbksdajatim.org.

- Departure at 1:00 am for a 1 hour transfer to the Kawah Ijen base camp from Bondowoso or Banyuwangi. After safety briefing and the provision of essential equipment (lamps, gas masks, etc.), we will begin the night climb at 02:00 am.
- Our experienced professional guides will lead you to the summit (2,300 m) through a beautiful mountain trail, under a ceiling of stars. It will take us between 1.5 and 2 hours of trekking to reach the top of Kawah Ijen volcano.
- At the top of the crater, we will descend into the volcano to see the blue flames.
- Our guides know the crater well and will help you descend safely. They will make sure you are safe and help you with the masks.
- At around 5 a.m., you will see the sunrise over the largest acid lake in the world. We will take time to appreciate the scene, enjoying the sunrise over the turquoise lake while watching the workers carry sulfur blocks up to the crater rim!
- At the top of the crater, we will descend into the volcano to see the blue flames.
- Our guides know the crater well and will help you descend safely. They will make sure you use the masks correctly and help you at all times.
- At around 5 a.m., we will watch the sunrise over the largest acid lake in the world. We will enjoy the sunrise over the lake while watching the workers carry sulfur blocks up to the crater rim.
- We will leave at around 6-7 a.m. and head back to the base camp (altitude of 1,900 m). You can appreciate the beautiful trail that led to the caldera of the stratovolcano in the daylight.
