If there’s one trip that truly captures the spirit of adventure in Indonesia, it’s the Bromo Ijen Tour Packages.

This journey takes you deep into East Java’s wild and volcanic landscapes, where every sunrise feels like a painting and every step leads to something breathtaking.

I still remember my first time standing at the edge of Mount Bromo, watching the sky burst into shades of orange and gold, it’s the kind of moment that stays with you forever.

The beauty of this tour is how it seamlessly combines two of Indonesia’s most iconic natural wonders: Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater.

You’ll witness the legendary Bromo sunrise from the Sea of Sand, trek across volcanic slopes, and later hike under a starry sky to see the surreal blue fire of Ijen, a natural phenomenon that exists in only a handful of places on Earth.

Between those epic stops, you’ll also pass through Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, lush highlands, and peaceful local villages that give East Java its charm.

These Bromo Ijen tour packages are perfect for first-time travelers, photographers chasing dramatic landscapes, couples looking for a romantic escape, or anyone who just wants to feel that rush of exploration again.

Whether you start from Surabaya, Malang, or even Bali, the route is flexible, the views unforgettable, and the experiences absolutely worth every mile.

Private vs Group Tours – Which One’s Right for You?

Choosing between private and group tours really depends on your budget and travel style.

I’ve tried both, and trust me, they offer completely different vibes.

Private Tours:

  • Best for couples, families, or photographers.
  • Flexible schedule, stop whenever you want for photos or snacks.
  • Comfort: private car, personalized guide, and custom itinerary.
  • Higher price, but totally worth it for privacy and convenience.

Group Tours:

  • Budget-friendly and great for solo travelers.
  • Fixed schedule with shared transport and group accommodation.
  • Good chance to meet new people, but less flexibility.

If you love comfort and flexibility, go private.

But if you’re adventurous, social, and on a tight budget, a group tour still gives you the same amazing sights at a lower cost.

Bromo Ijen Tour Itinerary (Detailed Overview)

If you’re wondering what a Bromo Ijen tour actually looks like day-to-day, here’s the full breakdown.

Having done this route myself, I can tell you, it’s one of the most scenic and rewarding adventures in East Java.

Expect early mornings, dramatic sunrises, and moments that’ll literally take your breath away (sometimes from excitement, sometimes from the mountain air!).

The typical tour runs for Bromo Ijen Tour 3 Days 2 Nights, starting from Surabaya or Malang and ending in Banyuwangi or Bali.

You’ll travel across Java’s mountains, waterfalls, and volcanic craters, so it’s a journey that’s equal parts adventure and discovery.

Day 1 – Pick-up & Bromo Area Stay

Your adventure kicks off with a pick-up from Surabaya or Malang, usually around morning or early afternoon.

The drive to Bromo takes about 3 to 4 hours, winding through green hills, small villages, and endless farmland.

If you’ve got some time, it’s worth making a stop at Madakaripura Waterfall (Optional Tour Program) a hidden gem surrounded by towering cliffs.

Just be prepared to get a little wet (okay, very wet) as you walk behind the waterfall curtain, it’s absolutely worth it for the photos and the experience.

Once you arrive at Cemoro Lawang village, you’ll check into your homestay or hotel overlooking Mount Bromo.

The temperature drops quickly here, often dipping to 10°C (50°F) at night, so pack a jacket. Grab dinner early and rest up, your alarm’s going off really early tomorrow.

Day 2 – Bromo Sunrise & Transfer to Ijen

This is the day you’ve probably been waiting for. Around 3:00 AM, your Jeep driver will pick you up for the Mount Bromo sunrise tour.

The bumpy ride across the Sea of Sand in darkness feels like driving on the moon, it’s surreal.

You’ll reach Penanjakan Hill or Kingkog Hill Viewpoint, the best viewpoint to catch the Bromo sunrise.

As the first light hits the horizon, you’ll see Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru, and the misty caldera, it’s one of the most breathtaking views in Indonesia.

After sunrise, your guide will drive you down to the Sea of Sand, where you’ll hike or ride a horse to the Bromo crater rim.

The short climb (about 250 steps) rewards you with an incredible view right into the smoking volcano.

Once you’ve explored, it’s time to head toward Banyuwangi or Bondowoso, the base town for Ijen.

The drive takes around 5–6 hours, with scenic stops for lunch or local coffee along the way.

You’ll check into your hotel by evening, rest well, because another early start awaits.

Pro Tip: Don’t skip breakfast at your Bromo hotel, you’ll need that energy before the long drive to Banyuwangi.

Day 3 – Ijen Blue Fire Hike & Return

The final day is a true highlight. Around midnight, you’ll start your Ijen Blue Fire hike.

It’s about a 3 km uphill trek (roughly 1.5–2 hours) to the crater rim. From there, your guide will lead you down into the crater (with a gas mask) to witness the blue fire phenomenon, a rare natural glow caused by burning sulfur.

Standing there in the dark, watching those electric-blue flames dance against the volcanic rock, it’s hard not to feel amazed.

Afterward, you’ll hike back up to the rim to catch the sunrise over the turquoise sulfur lake, it’s easily one of the most beautiful views in all of Java.

Once you’re done exploring, enjoy a simple breakfast back at your hotel before checking out.

Depending on your plan, your driver will drop you off either in Bali (via Ketapang ferry) or return you to Surabaya, marking the end of your East Java adventure.

If you stay in Banyuwangi

The Ijen blue fire tour starts at 1 am from your hotel. After the tour, you can head back to your hotel for breakfast and a shower before travelling to Bali.

If you’re planning to stay in Bondowoso town overnight.

Bear in mind that you won’t have the chance to shower or have breakfast at the hotel. You will get breakfast box from Hotel and then after the Ijen trip we directly head to Bali Harbour.

Bondowoso is on the west side of Mount Ijen, so you won’t be able to return to your hotel if you go to Bali after visiting Ijen.

If the drop-off point is in Surabaya, we normally book a place to stay in Bondowoso town, because the route is the same. You will have time to take shower before head to Surabaya.

If you’re heading to Bali, it’s probably best to stay the night in Banyuwangi. Banyuwangi is really close to Bali, just an hour’s ferry ride away.

  1. Bromo to Bondowoso takes around 4-5 hours.
  2. Bromo to Banyuwangi takes around 5-6 hours.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Witness the Ijen Blue Fire phenomenon (visible only before sunrise).
  • Enjoy sunrise over the Ijen sulfur lake.
  • Observe the sulfur miners at work — a humbling, unforgettable sight.
  • Transfer to Bali or Surabaya after breakfast.

Packing Tip: Bring a warm jacket, headlamp, gloves, gas mask, and water bottle, Ijen can get windy and the sulfur smoke is strong.

In Short:

  1. Total Duration: 3 Days 2 Nights
  2. Total Drive Time: 10–12 hours combined
  3. Difficulty Level: Moderate
  4. Best For: Nature lovers, photographers, couples, and adventure seekers

What’s Not Included

There are a few things travelers often assume are included but aren’t, so it’s good to budget for them in advance:

  • Lunch and dinner, though there are local eateries (warungs) or local restaurant along the route.
  • Personal expenses like snacks, souvenirs, and tips for guides/drivers.
  • Travel insurance, highly recommended for any mountain hike.
  • Optional stops or detours (like Madakaripura or Tumpak Sewu waterfalls), available for an extra fee.

Reviews

Inggit our tour guide made all the difference! Hotel accommodations were awesome and everything was organised so well.

Inggit our tour guide was one of the best parts of our trip! He was extremely friendly, made our girls trip so comfortable, and he knew so much history about all the places we visited. I really enjoyed talking to him while climbing Mount Ijen, where he shared about the sulfur miners and his own personal stories with Ijen. I was so glad to be able to catch the blue flames, and Inggit brought us to the best secret viewing spot away from the crowds.
He always knew the best spots for photos and where to avoid the crowds. The advice he gives really helped us have an exceptional trip, even the timing we should go to the locations like Tumpak Sewu. During our long drives, he would bring us to amazing Indonesian cuisine restaurants too!
He was patient and willing to answer all our questions, and he was so fun to be around!!! I highly recommend him!!!! TripAdvisor

Best Time to Visit Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater

If you’re wondering when’s the best time to visit Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater, let me save you a little headache, timing really does matter here.

Both volcanoes are open year-round, but the experience changes drastically depending on the season.

Having been caught in both misty rains and perfect golden sunrises, I’ve learned that the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one often comes down to timing.

Dry Season (April – October): The Ideal Time to Visit

Without a doubt, the dry season is the best time to explore East Java.

During these months, you can expect clear skies, mild temperatures, and minimal rain, perfect for catching that famous Bromo sunrise or the glowing blue fire of Ijen.

Why It’s the Best:

  • Crisp, clear sunrises with unbeatable visibility.
  • Dry trails for easier hiking at Ijen and Bromo.
  • Great lighting for photography, especially at Penanjakan Hill, Kingkong Hill or Argo wulan hill (Secret Viewpoint).
  • Smooth travel conditions on mountain roads.

You’ll want to pack a warm jacket, though, even in dry season, Bromo’s morning temperatures can dip as low as 5–10°C (41–50°F).

Ijen is slightly warmer but still chilly at night.

Pro Tip: The best months overall are May, June, July, and August, when visibility is highest and the sky over Bromo’s crater turns fiery at sunrise.

Rainy Season (November – March): Lush but Unpredictable

While the rainy season brings a fresh, green glow to East Java’s landscapes, it can also make hiking trickier.

Heavy rain sometimes causes fog and reduced visibility, especially at Bromo’s viewpoint.

That said, it’s not all bad, if you don’t mind a bit of rain, this season has its charm.

Waterfalls like Madakaripura and Tumpak Sewu are at their most powerful, and the tourist crowds thin out, giving you more peace and space to enjoy the views.

Expect During Rainy Season:

  1. Rain showers in the afternoon or evening.
  2. Cloudy sunrises (luck of the draw).
  3. Humid mornings but cooler nights.
  4. Slightly lower prices and fewer crowds.

Note: Always check weather updates before heading to Bromo & Ijen hikes may be delayed during lightning or heavy fog conditions.

Packing Tips for Every Season

Regardless of when you go, East Java’s weather loves to surprise you. Here’s what you should always pack for your Bromo Ijen Tour Packages:

  • Warm layers (temperature drops fast before sunrise).
  • Light rain jacket or poncho.
  • Comfortable, non-slip hiking shoes.
  • Hat, gloves, and scarf for early mornings.
  • Headlamp or flashlight for the Ijen midnight hike.
  • Gas mask (usually provided, but bring your own if sensitive).

In short:

  1. Best overall months: April to October (dry, sunny, photogenic).
  2. Avoid heavy rains: January to February.
  3. Always pack for both seasons: Java’s mountains have their own microclimate!

Want the perfect weather for your adventure? Plan your Bromo Ijen Tour Package between April and October for the best sunrises, smooth hikes, and clear crater views.

How to Get There – Starting Points and Routes

When planning your Bromo Ijen Tour, understanding the route is half the adventure.

East Java is well connected, but the journey can feel long if you’re not prepared.

I’ve taken this route several times, from Surabaya, from Malang, and even from Bali and each one offers a slightly different vibe.

The key is knowing which route fits your schedule and travel style best.

East Java Tour to Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater by train 1024x768 - BROMO IJEN TOUR PACKAGES

Common Route: Surabaya → Bromo → Ijen → Bali

The most popular and convenient route starts from Surabaya, East Java’s main transport hub.

Most travelers fly or take a train into Surabaya Juanda International Airport, where your tour driver or guide will meet you.

Or you can take a train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya Gubeng Train Station, take morning train from Yogyakarta to Gubeng that will arrive early afternoon in Surabaya Gubeng.

Here’s how the classic route flows:

  • Surabaya to Mount Bromo – Around 3–4 hours by private car.
  • Explore Bromo – Sunrise viewpoint, crater hike, and Sea of Sand.
  • Bromo to Ijen (Banyuwangi) – 5–6 hours of scenic drive through rural East Java.
  • Ijen to Bali – Cross the ferry from Ketapang to Gilimanuk (about 1 hour), then continue to your Bali destination.

This route is the most time-efficient and gives you a natural flow from east to west.

Plus, finishing in Bali feels like the perfect ending after all that hiking, nothing beats soaking in a pool with your volcano memories still fresh.

Tip: The Surabaya route is best for first-timers since it’s well supported by hotels, drivers, and local operators.

Alternative Routes: Malang Start or Banyuwangi Start

If you’re already exploring Malang, you can easily begin your Bromo adventure from there instead.

Malang is only 2.5 hours from Bromo, and the drive is scenic, full of rice fields, mountain roads, and small Tengger villages.

From there, the route continues toward Ijen just like the Surabaya option.

Mount Bromo Transport - BROMO IJEN TOUR PACKAGES

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Bali

You can reverse the route:

Start from Banyuwangi → Ijen → Bromo → Surabaya. This “reverse” itinerary is ideal for travelers heading westward and can save a few hours of travel time.

Fun Fact: Many travelers who start from Bali catch the midnight ferry to Java — it feels like an adventure before the adventure even begins!

Transportation Options: Private Car vs. Group Transfer

You’ve got two main ways to do the Bromo Ijen route, each with its pros and cons.

Private Car / Private Tour:

  • Comfortable and flexible (stop wherever you want for photos or food).
  • Door-to-door pickup from hotel or airport.
  • English-speaking Guide who knows local shortcuts.
  • Slightly higher cost but worth it for convenience and time savings.

Group Tour / Shared Transfer:

  • Budget-friendly option for solo travelers.
  • Great for meeting other travelers.
  • Fixed schedule and limited flexibility.

If it’s your first time or you’re short on time, I highly recommend the private tour, it’s smoother, faster, and lets you enjoy the road trip at your own pace.

Want to see all your transport options? Check our guide on Bromo Ijen Tour From Surabaya for detailed routes, maps, and insider travel tips.

In short:

  • Start from Surabaya for the most convenient route.
  • Try Malang if you prefer a quieter start.
  • Begin from Banyuwangi if you’re coming from Bali.
  • Go private if you value comfort and flexibility.

Where to Stay During the Bromo Ijen Tour (Best Hotels & Homestays)

When you’re planning the Bromo Ijen tour, choosing the right accommodation makes a big difference.

I’ve stayed in a few places during my East Java trips and learned that comfort, location, and rest matter just as much as the sunrise.

After a chilly pre-dawn jeep ride to the summit of Mount Bromo or the midnight trek to Ijen Crater, you’ll want a cozy bed and a good hot shower.

Where to Stay Near Mount Bromo

In the Bromo area (Cemoro Lawang Village or Ngadisari Village Bromo, Probolinggo), you’ll find guesthouses and lodges set on the rim of the caldera.

For example, there are rooms facing the volcano with views and cold air (so pack layers!).

When I stayed in Cemoro Lawang I found a simple homestay about 10 minutes’ walk from the jeep pick-up, price was modest and the view was unforgettable.

Tips for Bromo stays:

Choose a hotel with windows facing the volcano or caldera for that sunrise view.

Book early if you’re going in peak season (May–August) because rooms fill fast.

Accommodation Hotel in Mount Bromo East Java - BROMO IJEN TOUR PACKAGES

Where to Stay Near Ijen Crater

For the Ijen leg, based around Banyuwangi or Licin—you’ll find a range of accommodations from budget homestays to mid-range resorts.

I recommend staying one night near Banyuwangi so you’re well-positioned for the midnight hike to Ijen’s blue fire.

One guesthouse I stayed at offered a very early breakfast (which helped tons).

What to look for near Ijen:

  • Accommodation within 30-55 minutes of the trailhead (so you don’t waste energy driving).
  • A room with warm heating or blankets, it gets cold at 2–3 am.
  • Reliable check-in at odd hours, since you’ll be arriving late and leaving early.

Final Thoughts on Choosing Your Stay

Both areas are mountainous, remote, and charming in their own way.

Whether you choose a basic guesthouse or a boutique lodge, make sure it aligns with your pace: if you’re after comfort and rest, prioritise a nicer place, if you’re on a tighter budget, one solid clean homestay will work fine.

For instance, I made the mistake of booking too far from the trailhead once, ended up having a long drive at midnight, which drained my energy more than the hike.

Bottom line: commit to your route, pick your “base” accommodation wisely, and you’ll wake up fresh for the big moments, sunrise at Bromo and the blue fire adventure at Ijen.
